Curriculum Statement- English at Arundel Court

Intent

Our intent for English at Arundel Court Primary Academy is for every pupil to be inspired, engaged and enthused to read, write and communicate. We aim to provide pupils with the key skills and knowledge that they need to succeed in life beyond Arundel Court.

IMPLEMENTATION

English is taught daily in all classes and encompasses all aspects of the National Curriculum. Handwriting, phonics, spelling and reading are taught explicitly as well as embedded within English and throughout the wider curriculum.

Lessons are delivered through high quality teaching. The curriculum is delivered with speaking, listening and oracy opportunities at its core. With engaging hooks and outcomes our pupils are immersed in their learning.

Reading is at the heart of Arundel Court where there is an embedded reading culture. Pupils read for pleasure and books are used to enhance and support learning throughout the whole curriculum. This is fully supported by an excellent school library. Teachers are skilled in the early teaching of reading and phonics and its progression throughout the primary years.

Writing is purposeful and interesting. We build upon previous learning to develop the skills of writing.

Staff are supported with their subject knowledge through quality CPD. Teachers take part in regular assessment and moderation to inform teaching and learning.

Impact

Pupils will leave Arundel Court with the essential reading, writing and communicative skills that they need to progress, develop and achieve in life.
